In the financial year 2007-08, Royal Enfield sold a total of 38,548 motorcycles, an 18% growth from the previous year (32,612 bikes sold). Lal says that the company has clocked an average growth of 18% since 2005-06 with a target growth of 20% set for 2008-09. Even export Touched 2600 bikes in 2007-08, against 1,800 in 2005-06, and Lal says the company wants to set aside 25% of the production for exports. Even the earlier mindset of surplus production being brushed up and shipped overseas has undergone a change, with the company now looking to develop new markets for exports in developed countries like the UK, Germany and France. “They see it as a modern classic bike. And we are investing time and resources to understand these markets better,” says Lal.
