From Europe to India by motorcycle
An exciting adventure is being offered by the Wheel of India, a German company that
specialises in unusual motorcycle trips. In spring 2009, a motorcycle journey is on
offer, from Europe to India and back, taking five weeks each way. This is the second
such overland trip, after an initial trial in spring 2008. This time the trip will start in
Thessaloniki in Greece, making the trip shorter than the initial tour, which had the
bikers starting and ending the long journey in Germany. From Greece, the bikers will
travel through Turkey, Iran and Pakistan before arriving in New Delhi, India.
“The aim of the journey”, says Günter Schiele, Wheel of India manager and a veteran
of motorcycle tours of India, who will be leading the group of bikers himself, “is to
give the travellers a taste for travelling in remote areas that are hardly ever seen by
tourists, from dense forests to strange mountains and endless deserts and to give them
a glimpse of the culture and lives of local people in these areas.” Mr Schiele says the
motorcyclists were generally given a perhaps surprisingly friendly reception,
especially in Eastern Turkey and Iran.
The first stop on the route is Istanbul, then the bikers will travel across Turkey to Iran,
where they will visit the Caspian Sea and the beautiful cities of Isfahan, Yazd and the
remnants of ancient Persepolis. The journey across Iran, rarely visited by tourists, was
the highpoint of the trip for the first group of travellers, with some already planning to
return there for a longer stay.
Pakistan is the next country on the 8,000 kilometre journey. This is an endurance test
for riders and bikes. The group will cross some areas where all there seems to be is
heat, dust and wasteland.
The trip from Greece to India starts on 18 April 2009 and ends on 24 May 2009 with
the return journey from India to Greece starting on 30 May 2009 and ending on 5 July
2009. Travellers can use their own motorcycles or one supplied by the Wheel of India
(Royal Enfield Bullets 500 cc). They can also travel as passengers in the vehicle that
accompanies the bikers. The trip costs between EUR 3,998 and EUR 5,738.
